Marian Dörk

I am a postdoc at Newcastle University in Culture Lab's Digital Interaction group working with Martyn Dade-Robertson on the PATINA project. I am interested in exploring novel uses of interactive visualizations to support a wide range of information practices.

During my PhD research at the University of Calgary (2008-2012) in the InnoVis group and Interactions Lab, I designed and studied interactive visualizations to support exploratory forms of information seeking. My advisors were Sheelagh Carpendale and Carey Williamson. I have also undertaken related work with researchers and engineers at Google, Microsoft Research, IBM Research, and Universidad de Chile. Before my PhD, I studied Computational Visualistics at Universität Magdeburg, and have offered web solutions for more than ten years.

I enjoy riding my bike in the city, growing food in a community garden, and taking pictures of streetart. I sporadically update my visual journal, photostream, and status. I once played with animated GIFs and thresholding.

Research

While information on the Web is becoming increasingly abundant, diverse, and dynamic, web-based graphics and interactivity are becoming more and more advanced. In order to find better ways for making sense of growing information spaces, I seek to harness emerging technological trends on the Web. In particular, I design innovative information visualizations, create interactive exploration systems, and study the role of visualization in information seeking.
